‘Rebellion‘ by Tantrum is one hell of an album, can I just say that? Yes I fucking can. I’ve seen quite a good releases this year and this particular record sits somewhere on the top along with few other releases. For those of you who don’t know Tantrum, they are a band hailing from Sri-Lanka; formed in 2004 the band also has an EP entitled ‘The Destruction Begins’ under their belt. The band describes their music as progressive thrash with elements of tech-death and various other flavors of jazz and eastern elements. Not the exact thrash as I would akin to but they have enough arsenals to decimate your dull cells and hover along to their tunes.
The record is full of crazy heavy riffs, brilliant tech-guitar pieces and a well accompanied bass and drum parts. The vocal shows a wide range of influences from modern day Metalcore growls to Melo-Death screeches to some luminous clean vocals and the song structures? they are just a reminder that this band is brilliant and that there is no reason why you should not check them out, a very professional sounding build up to every song.
‘Purgatory of Sinners’ and the title track ‘Rebellion’ are the high point of the album without a spat and you could also hear some sweet opera-sque lady vocals on ‘Darkness Through your Eyes’ an example good enough to persuade everyone that there are lots of diversity in terms of how the band have approached the word ‘Progressive’. The recording/production is outstanding and this give them a huge edge over other releases from this region. A must buy/must listen release.
